Last week the majority of our MDT group left our safe haven here at the Mill. In fact, I was the only one who stayed behind. Unlike the others I am not doing a state sponsored voluntary social year (Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr). While they took part in a mandatory orientation course I had the pleasure of cleaning toilets and making beds with the housekeeping team. It was humbling to get an insight into the household work here at the Mill. There is a lot of work that is done every day, which I never recognized before. My gratitude for these magic fairies that clean up after us grew.
At the end of the week I volunteered at a youth event in Stuttgart with Sarah, a member of the OM Germany team, and we set up an OM stand. One highlight for me was meeting young people with a heart for Jesus. Another Highlight was visiting other organizations' stands; I realized how many organizations there are that do G(o)od work in Germany. I am thankful that I got to hear Shane Claiborne speak. He is an author and also a co-founder of “The Simple Way”, a community of Jesus followers who serve their neighborhood in a simple and genuine manner. They strive to model the early church in the book of Acts. They share their belongings and stand up for societal injustices. It reminded me that life with Jesus is more than beautiful thoughts of how heaven could be like. A life with Jesus is bringing parts of God’s kingdom into the world here and now.

We as MDT hope to serve Jesus in different ways this year, which could mean cleaning toilets, praying without ceasing or telling people there is hope in Jesus. As we go to our first outreaches we pray that God will mould us to be humble servants. I end with a quote from Claiborne on serving: “How can we worship a homeless man on Sunday, and ignore one on Monday?”.
